Hermie Schmarr
Hermie was a superb multi-sport high school and college athlete prior to World War II. He played football, basketball and baseball at New Britain High School. He attended Vermont Academy where he also played three sports and graduated from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He was a born leader. In a feat that could never be duplicated in the modern era he captained all three major sports teams, football, baseball and basketball at Catholic U. in his senior season and he saw action in the second Orange Bowl as Catholic U. defeated Ole Miss.
On the hardwood he had an all but unheard of 50-point effort during one of his games as a senior.
Hermie went on to play professionally for the Brooklyn Dodgers NFL team in 1940. He subsequently coached high school basketball in West Virginia before returning to New Britain where he was a standout on several local Industrial League teams.
