New Britain, CT Sports Hall of Fame
Pat Mazzarella
In 1971, Pat Mazzarella was named a Walter J. Smith, VFW Post 511 "Sportsman-of-the-Year," and in 1996 he was posthumously inducted into the New Britain Sports Hall of Fame.....Athletically, he was every bit that good.....Pat, who died in 1991, starred mainly in basketball and golf. When it came to basketball, he was always regarded as one of New Britain's best-ever while playing with such teams as the Hartford Hurricanes of the American Basketball League, New Britain Machine Powerhouses, and the Bristol Tramps, among others.....Not uncommon at all were games in which Mazzarella would score well into double-figures, topped off, perhaps, by the 63-point barrage he produced in a New Britain Industrial League game.....Once his playing days were behind him, "Maz" went on to be a top official in the area.....Pat's many golf laurels included the Connecticut State Amateur Championship, won in 1959. The same year, he reached the final of the New England Amateur Championship, played in Rutland, VT.....A navy veteran of the World War II Normandy landing and the Korean War, "Maz" taught many years in the New Britain School System.
